I have the good fortune to be employed at The Triple Door in Seattle, WA.
3/8 and 3/9
We had a couple of great double bill shows with Canadian music luminary Matthew Good , who was capably supported by Automatic Loveletter.
M. Good was completely unknown to me before Monday. Not too surprising. I don’t devour music as much as I used to. I did some research on him before the gig. He’s quite the interwebz savvy musician. He’s very political. I like him. He has a devoted following. The audience was peopled with many that made serious journeys to Seattle to enjoy his performance. Lots of new blood in the 3D. Very cool.
I liked his performance as well. A bit louder than most acts we have there. I think the venue kind of surprised him. If you haven’t been to The Triple Door (Umm… why not!? And ask for me!), it’s a really neat vintage/modern venue that makes for a really intimate entertainment experience (Plus you can have Wild Ginger food and wine!). He drew a few, “He’s the Dave Mathews of Canada”, offering from the highly critical staffers at the 3D. I don’t find that accurate. He gets quite a bit rockier than Seattle resident DM. He croons softly and soulfully at times. He peppers with music with really tight pop goodness. All in all very enjoyable. And he’s funny, irreverent, and very much an “everyman” type of rockstar. Ver kewl, ver kewl.
Automatic Loveletter is an up and coming act fronted by a powerfully throated ingenue Juliet Simms. They were acoustic for their offerings at the 3D, but powered very capably by her walloping voice. Again the jaded 3D staff (very hard to please, they see a lot of music) had some disparaging things to say. I found her delightful. You get so many breathy type of female leads these days. It’s cool to hear someone that can really kick some ass vocally. Was she perhaps trying too hard? Yeah, maybe. But she’s just a young’n. Sheesh! Give her time to develop. I think she’s got some star potential. And I think that she was very polite and easygoing with her interactions with 3D peeps. I have no idea where some of the staffers got off on describing her as a little Diva-esque. My main complaint with Automatic Loveletter was at the merchandising table. Their EP is available only through iTunes?! Blecccch! Fuck you, Steve Jobs! No thanks! I’m bummed that I couldn’t grab something to support them. I’ll hold out for something tactile from Easy Street, ah spose.
A big thanks to the 3D booking agent for bringing in some great talent that exposed the 3D to a lot of new peeps!
And a bigger thanks to all the overtipping Canadians in my section! w00t! C’mon back!
